Die Actionfilme des Leinwand-Cops Jack Slater haben es dem elfjährigen Danny angetan. Durch eine magische Eintrittskarte befindet sich Danny plötzlich im neuesten Film seines Helden. Seite an Seite mit seinem Idol darf er fortan die kühnsten Abenteuer bestehen und wird zu Jacks Partner im Kampf gegen die Unterwelt. Doch dann taucht ein gefährlicher Oberschurke plötzlich in der realen Welt auf. Gelungene Actionfilmparodie mit Arnold Schwarzenegger. Der elfjährige Danny Madigan (Austin O'Brian) ist ein großer Fan von Actionfilmen.
Besonders schwärmt er für seinen Helden, den coolen Großstadt-Cop Jack Slater (Arnold Schwarzenegger). Der Vorführer (Robert Prosky) von Dannys Stammkino beobachtet den Jungen schon lange und schenkt ihm eine magische Eintrittskarte. Mit einem Schlag findet sich Danny im neuesten Jack-Slater-Film wieder, direkt auf dem Rücksitz von Slaters Cabrio. Beide wundern sich zwar ob dieser Tatsache, dennoch gelingt es dem Jungen nicht, Slater davon zu überzeugen, dass sie sich in einem Film befinden. Denn die Ereignisse überschlagen sich: Jack Slater und Bösewicht Benedict (Charles Dance) liefern sich eine wilde Verfolgungsjagd, und Danny ist begeistert, dabei zu sein. Als Kenner der Jack-Slater-Filme kann er dem Cop mit geistreichen Einfällen und Informationen weiterhelfen.
So führt er ihn zum Anwesen des Mafiabosses Tony Vivaldi (Anthony Quinn). Hier treffen sie wieder auf Vivaldis rechte Hand, den skrupellosen Benedict, und entkommen mit knapper Not einem heftigen Feuergefecht. Beim Versuch, Slaters hübsche Tochter Whitney (Bridgette Wilson) zu kidnappen, bekommt Benedict die magische Eintrittskarte in die Finger, und sogleich weitet sich der Kampf in die reale Welt aus. Doch hier verliert Super-Cop Slater seine fantastischen Fähigkeiten und ist nicht mehr unverwundbar. Allmählich begreift er, dass er wirklich nur eine Filmfigur ist. Benedict holt sich derweil Verstärkung aus einem früheren Slater-Film und hilft Jacks Erzfeind, dem Ripper (Tom Noonan), durch das Portal ins echte New York hinüber.
Gemeinsam klügeln sie den Plan aus, Slater bei der Premiere seines neuesten Films für immer zu vernichten. Köstliche Actionkomödie, in der der siebenmalige Mister Olympia und Megastar Arnold Schwarzenegger sein Powerman-Image mit viel Witz und Ironie karikiert. Die erneute Zusammenarbeit mit "Predator"-Regisseur John McTiernan ("Jagd auf Roter Oktober", "Stirb langsam") sorgt für fulminante Stunts, herrlich aufwendige Special Effects und krachende Action. Der Film floppte an den amerikanischen Kinokassen, was vor allem auf die irreführende Promotion zurückzuführen war, die die Zuschauer einen handfesten Actionfilm erwarten ließ, um dann mit einer Parodie des Genres konfrontiert zu werden. Durch die internationalen Einspieleinnahmen wurde der Film allerdings doch kein Verlustgeschäft. Immer einmal wieder ist von einem Remake oder einer Fortsetzung die Rede.
Dazu befragt, steht Schwarzenegger dem Projekt wohlwollend gegenüber.

Ein fulminanter Actionfilm mit zahlreichen Gags und Verweisen, Anspielungen und verschobenen Realitätsebenen. Witzig, intelligent und selbstironisch gelingt es Action-Spezialist John McTiernan, eine rabenschwarze, fast etwas bösartige Action-Variante von Woody Allens "Purple Rose of Cairo" zu inszenieren, die die Genre-Welt völlig auf den Kopf stellt. Wie schon bei seinen anderen Action-Bravourstücken lässt es McTiernan auch hier richtig krachen und liefert ein rasantes Spektakel an Stunts und pyrotechnischen Spezialeffekten. Zusammengehalten wird dieses jedoch von einem einfallsreichen und cleveren Spiel mit den Gegensätzen von Fiktion und Wirklichkeit. Film und Realität prallen hier unverhofft aufeinander und bescheren beiden Seiten eine Art Kulturschock.
