Wenn ein Drehbuchautor lieber einen Actionfilm schreiben würde, aber sein Agent ihn zwingt, eine romantische Komödie zu fabrizieren, dann muss er wohl oder übel auf seine eigenen Erfahrungen mit Frauen zurückgreifen. Allerdings ist er Dauersingle, Frauenheld und glaubt weder an die wahre Liebe, noch an ein Happy End. Da ihm also die romantische Erfahrung fehlt, muss er in seinem Umfeld nach passenden Geschichten für sein Filmprojekt suchen. Bei einer langweiligen Charity-Gala lernt er unerwartet eine lebenslustige und faszinierende Frau kennen, die ihn von Beginn an in ihren Bann zieht. Es stellt sich aber bald heraus, dass die fabelhafte junge Frau vergeben und sogar schon verlobt ist. Doch die Sympathie ist so groß, dass es die beiden zumindest mit einer platonischen Freundschaft versuchen ….

Eine unterhaltsame Geschichte mit Chris Evans ("Captain America") und Michelle Monaghan ("The Best of Me - Mein Weg zu dir"), die in einer sehr komplizierten Freunde-Beziehung feststecken. Während er sich nämlich zum ersten Mal in seinem Leben zu verlieben scheint, hat sie bereits eine feste Beziehung und redet mit ihrem Partner über das Heiraten. Anfangs scheint ihre Freundschaft zwar zu funktionieren, aber das reicht ihm nicht ganz ... Seine Phantasien rund um diese neue Frau verarbeitet der Protagonist - typisch für einen Drehbuchautor - als Filmszenen mit sich selbst in der jeweiligen Hauptrolle. Topher Grace ("Valentinstag"), Luke Wilson ("Natürlich blond 2") und Ioan Gruffudd ("Fantastic Four") sind auch mit von der Partie.
