1898: Beim schweisstreibenden Schürfen nach Silber in der Einöde Kaliforniens stösst Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) auf Öl. Wenige Jahre später bewirtschaftet er auf ebendiesem Land mithilfe einiger Männer eine sprudelnde Ölquelle. Das schwarze Gold fordert ein erstes Opfer, als einer der Männer bei der Arbeit im Bohrloch erschlagen wird.
Der Verunfallte hinterlässt einen kleinen Sohn, den Plainview unter seine Obhut nimmt. Besessen von der Gier nach Öl und dem Willen zur Macht kauft der erfolgreiche Ölmann ständig neues Land hinzu. Bei den Verkaufsverhandlungen hat er seinen Sohn, den er H. W. nennt, stets dabei: Denn mit seiner Mär vom simplen Familienmenschen gewinnt er die Herzen der Farmer, die ihm ihr Land für einen Spottpreis überlassen.
Als eines Tages der junge Paul Sunday auftaucht und vom Öl erzählt, das auf der Farm seiner Eltern an manchen Stellen direkt aus dem Boden sprudelt, wittert Plainview das grosse Geschäft. Er will mit H. W. die Sundays besuchen und wie stets deren Land billig erwerben, das Öl fördern und dann weiterziehen. Doch dieses Ölfeld wird zu seinem Schicksal. Denn bei den Sundays begegnet er nicht Paul, sondern dessen Zwillingsbruder Eli , dem fanatischen Laienprediger der Gemeinde. Und obwohl die Sundays zuerst auf Plainviews Angebot eingehen wollen, hetzt Eli seine Eltern und bald auch schon die ganze Gemeinde gegen Plainview auf. Zwischen den beiden egomanischen Männern beginnt ein Kampf auf Leben und Tod.
Die wuchtige Öl-Tragödie «There Will Be Blood» basiert lose auf Upton Sinclairs Roman «Oil!». Regisseur und Drehbuchautor Paul Thomas Anderson («Magnolia», «Boogie Nights») dekonstruiert darin den Mythos der amerikanischen Pionierzeit und hinterfragt den ewigen Kampf der Menschheit gegen die Natur.
Die Parallelen zur heutigen Zeit, die kritische Hinterfragung des Kapitalismus, aber auch des religiösen Fanatismus sind evident. Doch in einem Interview mit der «Zeit» betont Anderson, dass es ihm nicht in erster Linie um die grosse gesellschaftskritische Parabel geht, die in Sinclairs Roman angelegt ist, sondern um «einen ganz altmodischen Zweikampf, einen Kampf um Leben und Tod». Er will seinen Film nicht als politisches Statement sehen, sondern in erster Linie unterhalten.
Method Actor Daniel Day-Lewis hat in Daniel Plainview seinen Meister gefunden und investiert sein ganzes Charisma und schauspielerisches Können in die Rolle des egomanischen Selfmademan und Misanthropen. Belohnt wurde er zu Recht mit seinem zweiten Oscar. Seinen ersten erhielt er 1990 für seine Darstellung des querschnittgelähmten Christy Brown in «My Left Foot». Doch Paul Dano in einer Doppelrolle als fanatischer Gegenspieler Eli Sunday und dessen Bruder Paul ist ihm durchaus gewachsen. Der 27-jährige New Yorker beeindruckte Day-Lewis bereits in «The Ballad of Jack and Rose», bei dem Day-Lewis' Frau Rebecca Miller Regie führte und das Drehbuch schrieb. Einem an Arthouse-Filmen interessierten Publikum dürfte Dano seit seinen Auftritten in «L.I.E.» und «Little Miss Sunshine» bekannt sein.

Für seine Darstellung erhielt Daniel Day-Lewis zahlreiche weitere Preise. Auf der Berlinale 2008 bekam der Film zwei Silberne Bären: Neben der Regie wurde Greenwoods Musik als herausragende künstlerische Leistung geehrt. Paul Thomas Anderson, Jahrgang 1970, hat unter anderem auch bei "Boogie Nights" (1997), "Magnolia" (1999) und "The Master" (2012) Regie geführt.
