Barrow in Alaska: Wenn einmal im Jahr hier am Polarkreis die Sonne untergeht, dann gleich 30 Tage lang: 30 Tage Dunkelheit, 30 Tage tiefste Nacht. Die meisten Bewohner der abgeschiedenen Kleinstadt nutzen dieses unwirtliche Phänomen, um ihre Heimat zeitweise in Richtung Süden zu verlassen. Eine von ihnen ist Stella, die Frau von Sheriff Eben Oleson, die zudem plant, sich von ihrem Mann zu trennen. Doch es kommt anders: Denn Stella verpasst den letzten Flieger und sieht sich nun genötigt, die kommenden 30 Tage gemeinsam mit Eben im Winterschlaf zu verbringen. Noch ahnt sie nicht, dass dies ihr kleinstes Problem sein wird. Denn für Stella und alle Verbliebenen wird die ungewöhnlich lange Nacht zum wahren Alptraum. Eine Horde geheimnisvoller Vampire um ihren Anführer Marlow fällt in das Dorf ein und über die Bewohner her, indem sie einem nach dem anderen das Blut aussaugt. Sheriff Oleson stellt sich den aggressiven Vampiren in den Weg, um die restlichen Einwohner von Barrow zu retten. Doch das rettende Tageslicht wird noch lange auf sich warten lassen und die Blutsauger scheinen unverwundbar zu sein sowie über übermenschliche Kräfte zu verfügen. Schließlich kann sich eine kleine Gruppe um Sheriff Oleson unbemerkt verstecken, darunter seine Frau und sein Bruder Jake. Ihre einzige Chance, dem Tod zu entkommen, ist allerdings die unbemerkte Flucht aus der Stadt.

Nachdem ihm die Studios eine Absage erteilt hatten, wandelte er die Geschichte in ein Graphic Novel um.David Slade inszenierte auch den Psychothriller 'Hard Candy'. Starinfo Josh Hartnett: „Sei ehrlich zu dir selbst und belüge alle anderen!“ Seltsame Ratschläge, die der 1978 geborene Schauspieler und Produzent da auf Lager hat. Ob ihn das seine Hollywood-Karriere gelehrt hat? Vom Teenie-Liebling in Filmen wie „The Faculty“ oder „The Virgin Suicides“ mauserte sich der leidenschaftliche Footballer in Blockbustern wie „Pearl Harbour“ oder „Sin City“ zum Hollywood-Star. 2008 wechselte Hartnett auf die Bühne, um „junge Leute fürs Theater zu begeistern“ und „als Schauspieler zu wachsen“. Mittlerweile wirkt Hartnett vereinzelt wieder in Filmen mit und bastelt an selbstproduzierten Projekten.
