Im Jahr 117 nach Christus erstreckt sich das römische Reich von den asiatischen Steppen im Osten bis zur britischen Insel im äussersten Westen. Doch im Norden Britanniens herrschen die Pikten, ein Stamm keltischer Krieger, die den Römern unter ihrem Gouverneur Agricola (Paul Freeman) mit Guerillataktik das Leben schwer machen. Bis York reicht der Arm des Imperiums. Dahinter beginnt eine finstere Welt voller Gefahren: Hier herrscht der piktische Kriegsherr Gorlacon (Ulrich Thomsen). Um die Nordgrenze abzusichern, schickt Agricola die neunte Legion unter Titus Flavius Virilius (Dominic West) gegen Gorlacon ins Feld. An Virilius Seite befindet sich auch Zenturio Quintus Dias (Michael Fassbender), der zuvor den piktischen Angriff auf eine römische Grenzfestung als einziger überlebt hat.

Geführt wird die Legion von der stummen Kundschafterin Etain (Olga Kurylenko), einer Piktin, die nach ihrer Gefangennahme als Kind in römischer Obhut aufgewachsen ist. Doch sie missbraucht das Vertrauen des römischen Generals schändlich und führt die Neunte schnurstracks in eine Falle, die ihr Gorlacon gestellt hat. Bloss sieben Legionäre überleben das Blutbad. Doch statt nach Süden zu fliehen, beschliesst Quintus Dias mit den anderen sechs Überlebenden nach Norden zu ziehen, um dort Virilius aus piktischer Gefangenschaft zu befreien. Als das Befreiungsmanöver misslingt, erhält Dias einen letzten Auftrag: Er soll die Überlebenden durch die Wildnis führen, zurück ins römische Einflussgebiet. Doch bereits ist ihnen Etain auf der Spur, und es beginnt ein gnadenloser Überlebenskampf.

Düster, wendungsreich und bildgewaltig: Regisseur Neil Marshall ("The Descent - Abgrund des Grauens") ist es gelungen, das unter Historikern umstrittene Schicksal der Neunten Römischen Legion in einen hochspannenden, visuell hervorragend umgesetzten Actionfilm zu verpacken. Neben den auf der Leinwand kampferprobten Hauptdarstellern Michael Fassbender ("X-Men: Erste Entscheidung") und Dominic West ("300") beeindruckt auch "Bond"-Girl Olga Kurylenko als undurchschaubare, stumme Fährtenleserin Etain.
