Kelly Canter (Gwyneth Paltrow) ist ein umjubelter Country-Star, aber seit Jahren schon kämpft sie mit ihrer Alkoholsucht. Als sie wieder einmal betrunken auftritt, stürzt und im Anschluss ihr ungeborenes Baby verliert, tritt sie in eine Entzugsklinik ein. Hier trifft sie auf den jungen Pfleger Beau (Garrett Hedlund), der sich in seiner Freizeit selber als Singer-Songwriter betätigt. Über die gemeinsame Liebe zur Musik kommen sich die beiden näher, und Kelly erholt sich zusehends. Trotzdem ist sie schockiert, dass ihr Ehemann und Manager James (Tim McGraw) bereits ihr Comeback geplant und eine Dreistädtetour und einen grossen Fernsehauftritt organisiert hat. Für das Vorprogramm hat James ausgerechnet die blutjunge Chiles Stanton (Leighton Meester) vorgesehen, die als ehemalige Miss Dallas jetzt eine Karriere als Sängerin anstrebt.

Kelly, die die Tournee lieber mit Beau anträte, ist von dieser Idee gar nicht begeistert. Bei ihrem Probeauftritt allerdings droht Chiles das Opfer ihrer Bühnenangst zu werden. Sie bringt keinen Ton heraus. Es ist Beau, der das junge Mädchen rettet, das er verächtlich Country-Barbie nennt. Er springt auf die Bühne und stimmt ein Lied an, das Chiles vorher in der Garderobe gesungen hat. Mit seiner Unterstützung wird der Auftritt ein voller Erfolg.

Jetzt ist es keine Frage mehr, dass Beau mit von der Partie ist. Das ist eine gute Entscheidung, wie sich herausstellen wird. Denn Kelly ist den Belastungen der Tour nicht gewachsen. Wieder greift sie zu Tabletten und Alkohol. Nach einem neuerlichen Zusammenbruch muss sie sich eingestehen, dass Beau nicht immer für sie da sein wird und sie sich ihrer Vergangenheit stellen und mit James ins Reine kommen muss. Schon früher hatte Gwyneth Paltrow unter der Regie ihres Vaters Bruce im Film "Duets" als Sängerin überrascht.

Während sie hier noch alle Songs selbst einspielte, ist sie auf dem Soundtrack von "Country Strong" neben dem Titelsong nur mit zwei weiteren Liedern ("Coming Home" und "Shake That Thing") vertreten. Während ihre Gesangsqualitäten als Country-Sängerin von Musikkritikern als eher mittelmässig beurteilt werden, wird Garrett Hedlunds Performance von "Chances Are" einhellig gelobt. Hedlund, der durch das Science-Fiction-Action-Spektakel "Tron: Legacy" (das Sequel ist in Arbeit) inzwischen einem Millionenpublikum bekannt wurde, hat in der Tat mehr drauf, als Muskeln zu zeigen. Seine nuancierten Auftritte in der Kerouac-Verfilmung "On the Road" und dem Coen-Brothers-Film "Inside Llewyn Davis" sind der beste Beweis dafür.
