In dem mystischen Land der Izmer regiert eine auserwählte Gruppe von Magiern, die im Besitz übermenschlicher Kräfte ist. Doch einer aus ihren Reihen, der böse Profion, führt nichts Gutes im Schilde. Mit einem hinterhältigen Plan möchte er die junge Kaiserin Savina vom Thron stürzen und die Herrschaft über das Imperium für immer an sich reißen. Hierzu muss er allerdings erst an das mystische Zepter der Kaiserin gelangen, das ihm Macht über die goldenen Drachen verleiht. Savina setzt alles daran, Profions Pläne zu durchkreuzen. Die Zauberin Marina und ihre Gehilfen, die beiden Gelegenheitsdiebe Ridley und Snails, sowie der eigenwillige Zwerg Elwood und die Elfe Norda, sollen den legendären "Rod of Savrille" finden, denn nur so können sie Profion besiegen.

Doch auf Marina und ihre tapferen Begleiter lauern jede Menge ungeahnter Gefahren und böse Überraschungen. Als ihnen auch noch Damodar, Profions grausamer Handlanger und Befehlshaber der Streitkräfte des Kaiserreichs, nach dem Leben trachtet, beginnt ein Wettlauf mit der Zeit. Aber die Kaiserin und ihre Anhänger sind fest entschlossen, das Spiel zu gewinnen...

Hintergrund: Regisseur Courtney Solomons erster Film. Die Rechte dafür erstand er schon 1990, es dauerte zehn Jahre das Budget dafür aufzustellen. Vorlage zum Film war das erste Papier-und-Stift-Rollenspiel namens "Dungeons & Dragons" (D&D), das die beiden US-amerikanischen Spieleautoren Dave Arneson und Gary Gygax 1974 entwickelten. Marlon Wayans, der den Snails darstellt, drehte zur selben Zeit "Requiem for a Dream". Daher mussten seine Szenen für "Dungeons & Dragons" in wenigen Wochen abgedreht werden. Starinfo Jeremy Irons: Spätestens seit dem Oskar für die Rolle des Claus von Bullow in "Die Affäre der Sunny von B." (1990) kennt ihn jeder. Eigentlich wollte Jeremy Irons Tierarzt werden, doch dafür war er in der Schule nicht gut genug. Seine ersten Jobs waren Bühnenhilfe, Putzmann, Gitarrenspieler, Sänger und Gärtner. Nach einer Reise durch Europa macht er eine Schauspielausbildung. Bis heute gehört seine Liebe dem Theater. Parallel arbeitet er in den 1970er Jahren fürs Fernsehen und wird zu Beginn der 80er Jahre von Hollywood entdeckt. Große Produktionen sind u.a. "Stirb langsam: Jetzt erst recht" (1995), "Der Mann mit der eisernen Maske" (1997) und "Eragon - Das Vermächtnis der Drachenreiter" (2006). Zuletzt war er 2018 in "Red Sparrow" zu sehen. Doch auch wenn er als ausgesprochen fleißig und zielstrebig gilt, als Schauspieler nimmt er sich nicht so wichtig: "Ich war nie einer von den glühenden Darstellern, mehr und mehr sehe ich, dass ich arbeite, um das Leben zu führen, das ich führen möchte." Als ihn ein Journalist nach dem Grund fragte, warum er den eine Rolle wie in "Dungeons & Dragons" (2000) akzeptierte, sagte der zweifache Vater: "Machen Sie Witze? Ich habe gerade ein Schloss gekauft, von irgendetwas musste ich es bezahlen!" Irons gehört das Kilcoe Castle in County Cork in Irland. Gemeinsam mit seiner Frau, der Schauspielerin Sinead Cusak, lebt er abwechselnd dort und in London. Starinfo Thora Birch: Ihre Eltern lernten sich bei den Dreharbeiten zu einem Pornofilm kennen und benannten ihre 1982 geborene Tochter nach dem Donnergott Thor. Kein Wunder dass sich Thora Birch eher zu skurrileren Rollen hingezogen fühlt. Wie zur Figur der Jane in "American Beauty" die ihr den Durchbruch in Hollywood verschaffte oder der durchtriebenen Liz in 'The Hole'. Ihr großes Vorbild ist Jodie Foster: "Ich bewundere sie sehr. Sie benutzt ihren Verstand."
