Der Milliardär Victor von Doom (Julian McMahon) finanziert eine Expedition ins All, die er mit seiner Freundin Sue Storm (Jessica Alba), ihrem Bruder Johnny (Chris Evans), dem Wissenschaftler Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd) und dessen Studienfreund Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis) unternehmen will. Reeds Evolutionstheorie, die er mit Experimenten zu untermauern sucht, ist für von Doom Nebensache. Viel lieber würde er den Forscher, der ihm seit Langem ein Dorn im Auge ist, grandios scheitern sehen. Tatsächlich steht die Reise ins All unter einem schlechten Stern. Womit jedoch auch von Doom nicht gerechnet hat: Ein kosmischer Sturm fegt über das Raumschiff hinweg, die fünf Teilnehmer der Expedition überleben wie durch ein Wunder. Reed sieht seine Forschungsarbeit in Trümmern.
Dies ist jedoch beileibe nicht die einzige Folge der verunglückten Expedition, wie die Rückkehrer bald feststellen. Ihre Körper verändern sich auf fantastische Weise: Ben mutiert zu einem Koloss, der ganz aus Stein zu bestehen scheint, Reed kann sich gummiartig verformen, Johnny verwandelt sich in einen menschlichen Feuerball, und Sue wird unsichtbar. Während sich all diese unverhofften Eigenschaften in positiver Weise einsetzen lassen, geht mit Hintermann Victor von Doom eine höchst unerfreuliche Veränderung vonstatten: Er entwickelt sich zu einem elektromagnetischen Stahlmutanten, der einzig vom Gedanken an Rache an den vier anderen Teilnehmern beseelt ist - den "Fantastic Four".

Fantastische Action hoch vier. Mit "Fantastic Four" tritt nach den X-Men das nächste Superhelden-Team auf den Plan. Die jeweiligen Superkräfte der vier werden durch phänomenale Spezialeffekte visualisiert. Auch sonst weist "Fantastic Four" all jene Eigenschaften auf, die eine gelungene Comic-Verfilmung ausmachen: farbenprächtige Bilder, gewaltige Actionszenen und eine gute Prise Humor. Viermal Daumen hoch für die fantastischen Weltretter. / Offenbar waren die "Fantastic Four" von 2005 noch nicht fantastisch genug: Derzeit dreht Josh Trank im Auftrag von Marvel eine Neuauflage der Abenteuer des Superhelden-Quartetts. Der Filmtitel bleibt der gleiche, der Cast ist allerdings ein neuer: Miles Teller gibt Reed Richards alias Mr. Fantastic, Kate Mara ist Sue Storm alias Invisible Woman, Michael B. Jordan spielt Johnny Storm alias Human Torch, und Jamie Bell wird als Ben Grimm alias The Thing zu sehen sein. Den Part von Doctor Doom übernimmt Toby Kebbell. Im Kino wird der Streifen im Sommer 2015 gezeigt.
