Es war einmal in einem weit entfernten Reich? Dort wohnen in einem kleinen Dörfchen am Waldrand ein Bäcker und seine Frau . Die beiden wünschen sich nichts sehnlicher als ein Kind. Als eines Tages eine alte runzlige Frau bei ihnen in der Backstube auftaucht, verrät sie ihnen, weshalb ihr Wunsch nicht in Erfüllung gehen kann: Die ganze Familie des Bäckers wurde von ihr mit einem Fluch belegt, weil sein Vater vor langer Zeit ihren Garten ausrauben wollte.
Sie ertappte den Räuber auf frischer Tat und verlangte von ihm einen diabolischen Tauschhandel: Er konnte das Gemüse mitnehmen, musste ihr dafür aber das neugeborene Kind der Familie geben. Doch da der Vater auch ihre magischen Bohnen mitnahm, verlor sie für immer ihre Jugend und Schönheit und wurde innert kürzester Zeit eine unansehnliche Hexe. In ihrer Wut und Verzweiflung sprach sie den Fluch über die Familie.
Die Hexe ist bereit, den Fluch aufzuheben, unter der Bedingung, dass der Bäcker und seine Frau ihr vier Dinge bringen: eine Kuh so weiss wie Milch, einen Umhang so rot wie Blut, Haare so gelb wie Mais und einen Schuh aus reinem Gold. Für die beiden beginnt nun eine wilde Jagd quer durch den Wald auf der Suche nach diesen Dingen. Dabei begegnen ihnen die unterschiedlichsten Märchenfiguren: der Bursche Hans , der seine geliebte weisse Kuh an den Bäcker verkauft, Rotkäppchen , deren roter Mantel ihm ins Auge sticht, Rapunzel , deren Turm die Bäckersfrau sieht, als sie durch den Wald geht, und Aschenputtel und ihren goldenen Schuh, über den sie stolpert, als sie von einem Prinzen verfolgt wird.
Nicht nur das Bäckers-Ehepaar, auch die Märchenfiguren suchen und bekommen schliesslich ein Happy End. Vorerst - denn bald schon wird klar, dass das Happy End gar kein Happy End ist. Einige sind unzufrieden mit ihrem neuen Leben - der Bäcker will mehr verdienen, die nun wieder junge und schöne Hexe hat ihre magischen Kräfte verloren - und es kommt zu einem höchst unerwarteten Showdown, nach dem nichts mehr ist, wie es vorher war.
Im Musical «Into the Woods», zu dem Stephen Sondheim für Musik und Liedtexte verantwortlich zeichnet, werden die klassischen Erzählungen von «Aschenputtel», «Rotkäppchen», «Hans und die Bohnenranke» und «Rapunzel» zu einer ganz neuen Geschichte verknüpft werden. Zur Verfilmung, bei der Rob Marshall Regie führt, meint der «Spiegel»: «Der böse Wolf ist lüsterner, die Prinzen alberner als im Original. Glänzend aufgelegte Stars wie Meryl Streep und Johnny Depp machen das Filmmusical zum Genuss.» SRF zwei zeigt «Into the Woods» exklusiv in Zweikanalton deutsch/englisch; die englischen Songtexte sind deutsch untertitelt.
