Privatdetektiv Edward Carnby hat sich auf übersinnliche Phänomene spezialisiert. Auf einer seiner Expeditionen entdeckt er ein Artefakt der vor tausenden von Jahren untergegangenen Abkani-Zivilisation. Carnbys Ex-Freundin, die Archäologin Aline Cedrac, ist sehr an dem Artefakt interessiert und versucht, dessen Geheimnis zu entschlüsseln. Währenddessen geschehen nicht weit entfernt mysteriöse Dinge: Harmlose Bürger verwandeln sich in Zombies und greifen ihre Mitmenschen an, und in einem Museum fällt ein blutrünstiges Monster über die Angestellten her. Die Ereignisse rufen Carnbys Rivalen und Ex-Kollegen Commander Richard Burke und seine Spezialeinheit 73 auf den Plan, die zur Bekämpfung paranormaler Bedrohungen eingesetzt wird. Sie finden heraus, dass das Artefakt ein Portal in eine andere Dimension geöffnet hat, aus der todbringende Kreaturen in unsere Welt gelangen. Hinter all dem scheint der skrupellose Professor Hudgens zu stecken, der die verschollen geglaubten Geheimnisse der Abkani erforschen will. Der Schlüssel, um das Portal wieder zu schließen, liegt anscheinend in Carnbys Vergangenheit ...

Privatdetektiv Carnby (Edward Slater) reist auf der Suche nach übernatürlichen Phänomenen um die ganze Welt. Auf einer geheimnisvollen Insel stößt er auf die Überreste einer vergangenen Hochkultur. Als er die Artefakte in die USA mit zurückbringt, bekommt er es mit einem bösartigen Monster zu tun, das Menschen in Zombies verwandelt. "Alone in the Dark" ist inbesondere Fans von Videospielen ein Begriff. Der erste Teil der Reihe, der 1992 erschien 1992, gilt als Begründer des Subgenres Survival Horror. Eine größere Bekanntheit erlangte dieses später durch Titel wie "Resident Evil".
