Der Witwer Gus Lobel arbeitet seit Jahrzehnten als Talentscout für den traditionsreichen Baseballverein Atlanta Braves. Der altgediente Profi reist durchs Land und hält Ausschau nach hoffnungsvollen Baseballspielern. Nach Aussage seines Chefs und Freundes Pete Klein ist er nicht einfach irgendein Talentsucher, sondern der Beste in seinem Geschäft. Deshalb hält Pete seine schützende Hand über den alten Mann, lag dieser doch mit seinem Instinkt in der Vergangenheit meist richtig.
Inzwischen wird es aber eng für Gus. Einerseits droht er seine Sehkraft zu verlieren und anderseits steht er mit seinem Widerstand gegen jede Art von Neuerungen mittlerweile ziemlich alleine da - so allein, dass der junge Manager Phillip Sanderson , der sich im Gegensatz zum Alten allein auf Statistiken verlässt, den Zeitpunkt gekommen sieht sich, Gus' Posten zu krallen.
Gus kann erreichen, dass ihm der Vorstand eine letzte Bewährungsprobe gewährt: Die Atlanta Braves müssen herausfinden, ob sie bei der anstehenden Transferrunde ihren ersten Pick für den talentierten Schlagmann Bo Gentry verwenden sollen. Die Zahlen sprechen dafür ? und Gus soll ihn vor Ort unter die Lupe nehmen.
Als Unterstützung bittet Pete Gus? Tochter Micky , ihn auf der Reise zu begleiten ? gegen den Willen ihres Vaters. Die ehrgeizige Anwältin sieht darin ihre vielleicht letzte Gelegenheit, die Beziehung zu ihrem Vater zu verbessern, der sie alleine grossgezogen hat, seit ihre Mutter starb. Und so reist sie zu ihm nach North Carolina.

Robert Lorenz schuf mit seinem Regiedebüt einen ur-amerikanischen Film, der es perfekt versteht, ein Familien- mit einem klassischen Sportdrama zu verbinden. Dabei konnte er sich nicht nur auf ein hochemotionales Drehbuch, sondern auch auf eine ganze Reihe von Schauspielstars verlassen. Clint Eastwood gibt in seiner bisher letzten Schauspielrolle perfekt den mürrischen alten Mann, während Amy Adams als dessen Tochter versucht, die Beziehung zueinander zu retten. In den Nebenrollen treten zudem Justin Timberlake, John Goodman und Clints Sohn Scott Eastwood auf.
