Kurioserweise beschreibt Catherine in einem ihrer Romane einen Mord nach demselben Muster. Ist der Fall nun sonnenklar oder unheimlich vertrackt? Die kühle Blonde treibt ein laszives Spiel mit der Polizei, und bald kann auch Nick ihrer unheimlichen Anziehungskraft nicht mehr widerstehen.
Zwischen den beiden entwickelt sich eine heiße Affäre - doch plötzlich beginnt Catherine, die selbst in wilder Ekstase nie die Kontrolle verliert, ihren zunehmend beunruhigten Liebhaber ans Bett zu fesseln ... "Basic Instinct" ist ein perfekt inszenierter, doppelbödiger Psychothriller mit Sharon Stone, Michael Douglas und Jeanne Tripplehorn. Der abgehalfterte Rockstar Johnny Boz (Bill Cable) wird in seiner Villa ermordet aufgefunden. Das Opfer wurde während des Liebespiels ans Bett gefesselt, die Tatwaffe: ein Eispickel. Detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas), ein notorisch übel gelaunter Cop, der seine besten Tage hinter sich hat, soll den Fall aufklären. Seit Nick im Einsatz zwei unschuldige Passanten erschoss, kämpft er mit dem Alkohol und muss sich die Diensttauglichkeit regelmäßig von der Polizeipsychologin Dr.
Beth Garner (Jeanne Tripplehorn) bescheinigen lassen, mit der er auch eine Affäre hat. Der Mordfall gibt dem abgebrühten Polizisten Rätsel auf: Die Spur führt direkt zu der attraktiven und reichen Krimischriftstellerin Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone), die mit Johnny Boz eine Gelegenheitsbeziehung führte. Kurioserweise findet sich in einem ihrer Romane eine detailgenaue Beschreibung des Mordes an Johnny Boz. - Ist Catherine so dumm, die Tat vorher in einem Buch auszubreiten? Oder ist die mondäne Frau so raffiniert, die Ermittler auf diese Weise zu täuschen? Je weiter Nick in dem Fall ermittelt, desto mehr erliegt auch er der erotischen Ausstrahlung dieser lasziven Blonden, die mit ihm Katz und Maus spielt, eine provozierende Vorliebe für Eispickel hat - und ihren nächsten Roman ausgerechnet über Nick selbst schreibt. Nick kann nicht widerstehen und lässt sich auf eine heiße Affäre mit Catherine ein. Doch als es zur Sache kommt und Catherine ihn ans Bett fesselt, hat Nick das Gefühl, einen fatalen Fehler gemacht zu haben ... "Basic Instinct", ein Kassenknüller der 90er-Jahre, ist ein perfekt in Szene gesetzter erotischer Thriller, der geschickt Anleihen bei Hitchcock nimmt und durch sein doppelbödiges Spiel mit den Erwartungen der Zuschauer:innen bis zur allerletzten Sekunde atemlose Spannung erzeugt. Neben Michael Douglas ist der eigentliche Star dieses elegant inszenierten Polizeifilms die damalige Newcomerin Sharon Stone. Provozierender Höhepunkt ist die Szene im Polizeirevier, als Sharon Stone die selbstgefälligen Macho-Polizisten mit ungewohnten Einblicken aus der Fassung bringt. Hollywoods Enfant terrible Paul Verhoeven inszenierte nach einem Buch von Joe Eszterhas; Kamera führte der spätere "Speed"-Regisseur Jan de Bont.

Regisseur Paul Verhoeven inszenierte einen kühlen Erotikthriller, der die Abgründe der menschlichen Seele ausleuchtet. Schon beim Start der Dreharbeiten im April 1991 sorgte "Basic Instinct" für Aufsehen. Der niederländische Regisseur hatte sich vor Drehstart mit zahlreichen Schwulen- und Lesbenvereinigungen in San Francisco zusammengesetzt, um das skandalträchtige und über drei Millionen US-Dollar teure Drehbuch von Joe Eszterhas zu entschärfen. Als diese jedoch forderten, dass Plot und Charaktere drastisch verändert werden sollten, gab Verhoeven die Zusammenarbeit mit ihnen auf. Die Proteste der Schwulen- und Lesbenvereine dauerten während der Dreharbeiten an, was eine kostenlose Publicity für den Thriller bedeutete. Die Hauptdarsteller Sharon Stone und Michael Douglas überzeugen durch ihre brillante Darstellung. Die weibliche Hauptdarstellerin hatte mit der Rolle der Eispickel-Mörderin Catherine Tramell ihren ganz großen internationalen Durchbruch. Zuvor hatte sie unter anderem Gastauftritte in TV-Serien wie "Remington Steele" und "Mike Hammer" und Kinofilmen wie "Quatermain - Auf der Suche nach dem Schatz der Könige" oder in Paul Verhoevens "Total Recall". mit dem Part der eiskalten blonden Schönheit Thriller "Basic Instinct" avancierte sie zum Weltstar. Für ihre Rolle in "Casino" erhielt Sharon Stone 1996 einen Golden Globe und eine Oscar-Nominierung. 2003 war die Schauspielerin, die sich vehement für die Rechte von Homosexuellen engagiert, unter anderem in Mike Figgis' Thriller "Cold Creek Manor" zu sehen. 2005 begeisterte sie neben Bill Murray in der Jim-Jarmusch-Komödie "Broken Flowers". Auch der Rechtsstreit um eine Fortsetzung von "Basic Instinct" fand ein gutes Ende: Die Fortsetzung "Basic Instinct - Neues Spiel für Catherine Tramell", für den Stone unter anderem mit David Morrissey und Charlotte Rampling vor der Kamera stand, kam im April 2006 in die deutschen Kinos, konnte den Erfolg des ersten Teil jedoch nicht erreichen. Michael Douglas war gerade mal 32 Jahre alt, als er seinen ersten Oscar bekam - allerdings nicht als Darsteller, sondern als Produzent des Milos-Forman-Klassikers "Einer flog über's Kuckucksnest". 1988 gab es die begehrte Trophäe dann für seine schauspielerischen Leistungen in Oliver Stones "Wall Street". Das Filmbusiness lernte Douglas schon als Kind durch seinen berühmten Vater kennen, den er zu Dreharbeiten begleitete. Nach seinem Studium an der University of California und Schauspielausbildung in New York gelang ihm an der Seite von Karl Malden als Inspector Steve Keller in der Kult-Serie "Die Straßen von San Francisco" der Durchbruch als Mime. Seither spielte Douglas in Welterfolgen wie "Hallo, Mr. President", "Falling Down - Ein ganz normaler Tag", "Enthüllung", "Basic Instinct", "Eine verhängnisvolle Affäre", "Auf der Jagd nach dem grünen Diamanten", "Der Rosenkrieg" oder "The Wonder Boys". Außerdem zeichnet der Friedensbotschafter der Vereinten Nationen als Produzent für viele weitere Kassenschlager verantwortlich.
