Atombombentests verursachten auf Inseln im Pazifischen Ozean die riesige Mutation einer Echse. Nach einem Angriff auf ein japanisches Fischerboot und dem Fund gewaltiger Fußabdrücke in Panama, erbittet das US-Militär die Unterstützung vom Biologen Dr. Nick Tatopoulos. Kurz darauf taucht Godzilla, das Ungeheuer, an der Ostküste der USA auf, wo es eine Schneise der Verwüstung hinterlässt. Nick findet heraus, dass das riesige Reptil schwanger ist und warnt das Militär. In der Zwischenzeit nistet sich die Echse im Untergrund von Manhattan ein und legt Hunderte von Eiern.

Weil aber Nicks Exfreundin Audrey, eine Journalistin, geheime Militäraufnahmen stiehlt und damit an die Presse geht, wird Nick aus dem Projekt entlassen. Gemeinsam mit Philippe Roche, der für den französischen Geheimdienst arbeitet, bleibt Nick dennoch an der Sache dran und macht sich auf die Suche nach dem Nest. Die beiden Männer folgen den Spuren des Untiers und finden die Eier schließlich im Madison Square Garden. Die Jungtiere beginnen bereits zu schlüpfen, weshalb die Arena gesprengt wird. Doch im Gegensatz zu seiner Brut überlebt Godzilla den Angriff und ist wütender und gefährlicher als jemals zuvor.

"Godzilla" aus dem Jahr 1998 ist die erste US-amerikanische Adaption der berühmten japanischen Monsterfilm-Reihe. Der erste Godzilla-Film erschien in Japan bereits 1954; bisher wurden dort 28 Filme produziert. Im Jahr 2014 erschien die zweite amerikanische "Godzilla"-Version, in der u.a. die Schauspieler Bryan Cranston und Aaron Taylor-Johnson mitwirken. Godzilla ist weltweit so populär, dass die Monsterechse 2004 - zu ihrem 50. Geburtstag - mit einem Stern auf dem Hollywood Walk Of Fame geehrt wurde. Regisseur des US-Remakes ist der Deutsche Roland Emmerich ("Stargate", "Independence Day", "2012", "White House Down"), der zusammen mit dem US-amerikanischen Filmproduzenten und ehemaligen Schauspieler Dean Devlin auch das Drehbuch schrieb. Unter den Schauspielern ist Jean Reno ("Léon - Der Profi", "Die purpurnen Flüsse"), der in der Rolle des französischen Geheimagenten glänzt, hervorzuheben. Als Dr. Nick Tatopoulos ist Matthew Broderick zu sehen, der in den 80er-Jahren durch seine Hauptrollen in "WarGames" und als Ferris Bueller in "Ferris macht blau" bekannt wurde.
