Semesterbeginn am Bostoner Massachusetts Institute of Technology: Der angesehene und mit diversen Preisen ausgezeichnete Mathematikprofessor Gerald Lambeau stellt seinen Studenten eine Aufgabe, die er für unlösbar hält. Damit sie sich dennoch die Zähne daran ausbeißen, stellt er ihnen eine hervorragende Zensur in Aussicht, sollten sie die Aufgabe bis zum Semesterende gelöst haben. Womit er allerdings nicht gerechnet hat: Bereits am nächsten Tag steht die richtige Lösung an der Tafel - und keiner der Studenten will es gewesen sein. Neugierig, wer das Genie ist, stellt Lambeau eine zweite Aufgabe und erwischt Hausmeistergehilfen Will Hunting dabei, wie er auch diese im Handumdrehen löst. Doch der rebellische Waisenjunge will von seiner Genialität nichts wissen, ist noch nicht reif, etwas aus seinen Fähigkeiten zu machen. Will ist ein richtiger Underdog, der lieber mit seinen Kumpels aus dem Arbeiterviertel Southie in Kneipen herumhängt und Schlägereien anzettelt.
Die Chance für Lambeau kommt, als Will wegen einer Prügelei mit einem Polizisten zu einer Gefängnisstrafe verurteilt wird: Unter der Bedingung, dass Will sich einmal in der Woche bei ihm zu einer Mathematiksitzung einfindet und eine Therapie macht, kann Lambeau den Richter überzeugen, Will noch einmal davonkommen zu lassen. Die Mathematiksitzungen sind für Will ein Kinderspiel, doch sieht er es überhaupt nicht ein, vor irgendjemandem sein Seelenleben auszubreiten. Er vergrault einen Psychiater nach dem anderen und will auch von Lambeaus hochfliegenden Karriereplänen nichts wissen. Will Hunting will sich für nichts und von niemandem einspannen lassen, daran ändert auch die aufkeimende Liebe zu der Studentin Skylar nichts. Auch sie leidet unter der Unnahbarkeit des zornigen jungen Mannes. Nachdem Will wieder einmal einen Seelenklempner verschlissen hat, kommt Lambeau auf die Idee, ihn mit seinem alten Freund Sean Maguire zusammenzubringen, einem Psychologieprofessor, der ebenfalls aus Southie stammt und den ein ähnlicher sozialer Hintergrund mit Will verbindet.
Erst ihm gelingt es, Wills harte Schale zu durchbrechen und ihn dazuzubringen, mit seiner schrecklichen Kindheit abzuschließen. Und er ist es auch, der Will - entgegen aller Bemühungen Lambeaus - klarmacht, dass persönliche Erfahrungen und Gefühle mindestens ebenso wichtig sind wie das Wissen aus Büchern.

(film-dienst) Schon die Entstehungsgeschichte von "Good Will Hunting" ist filmreif: Die aufstrebenden Jungschauspieler und Freunde Matt Damon und Ben Affleck sind enttäuscht von den ihnen angebotenen Rollen und schreiben sich kurzerhand ein eigenes Drehbuch auf den Leib. Dann gelingt es ihnen, sowohl einen etablierten Produzenten (Lawrence Bender) zu finden, als auch ihren Lieblings-Regisseur Gus Van Sant und hervorragende Schauspielstars wie Robin Williams und Minnie Driver zu verpflichten. Der Film wird gedreht und entwickelt sich zu einem riesigen Erfolg - nicht nur am Box Office, sondern auch bei der Kritik. So blieben auch die Oscars nicht aus: Matt Damon und Ben Affleck erhielten eine der begehrten Trophäen für das Drehbuch, und Robin Williams wurde als bester Nebendarsteller ausgezeichnet. Insgesamt wurde "Good Will Hunting" neun Mal für den Oscar nominiert, unter anderem in den Kategorien bester Film, beste Regie und bester Hauptdarsteller. Ohne je schwerfällig zu wirken, handelt die Coming-of-Age-Story von den Folgen einer verdorbenen Kindheit, gesellschaftlichen Erwartungen und der Suche nach dem eigenen Ich. Verschiedene Handlungsstränge, wie die Romanze zwischen Damon und Driver oder die Freundschaft zwischen Damon und Affleck, sind geschickt in dieses vielschichtige Drama eingearbeitet. So entstand ein außergewöhnlicher, wortwitziger und ergreifender Film, in dem es nicht nur um die Frage geht, wie man sein Talent einsetzt, sondern vor allem um eines: die Balance zwischen Hirn und Herz Robin Williams, der in den Jahren zuvor hauptsächlich in Kinderfilmen und Komödien zu sehen war, hatte in der Rolle des einfühlsamen Psychologen Sean Maguire endlich wieder einmal die Gelegenheit, seine Klasse unter Beweis zu stellen. Der aufmüpfige Herumtreiber Will Hunting wird von dem damals wenig bekannten Matt Damon brillant verkörpert, während der ebenso unbekannte Ben Affleck die wichtige Rolle seines besten Freundes Chuckie bravourös ausfüllt. Die weibliche Hauptrolle übernahm Minnie Driver, die während der Dreharbeiten eine Affäre mit Damon begann und unter anderem auch in "Grosse Pointe Blank", "Hard Rain", "Beautiful" und "Das Phantom der Oper" überzeugte.
