Dabei versuchen sie nicht nur, die Freiheit zu erlangen, sondern auch die legendäre Beute eines Geldtransportüberfalls zu finden. Das ungleiche Trio tappt dabei von einem Unglück ins nächste und trifft auf seinem Abenteuer im wilden Mississippi auf die verrücktesten Charaktere. Dabei bleiben ihnen immer die Gesetzeshüter im Nacken, welche die drei Ausbrecher nicht nur wieder einfangen wollen, sondern auch ein Auge auf den Schatz geworfen haben. Mit dieser skurrilen, zweifach oscar®-nominierten Abenteuerkomödie liefern die beiden Kultregisseure Ethan und Joel Coen eine moderne Version der "Odyssee" des griechischen Dichters Homer ab.
Dabei bleiben sie bei ihrem unvergleichlichen Stil, der ihre vorigen Filme wie "Fargo" oder "The Big Lebowski" auszeichnete. Filmspiegel.de meint: "Mit 'O Brother, where art thou?' hat die Phantasie der Coens einen beschwingt und leichtfüßigen Film hervorgebracht, dem es auf unnachahmliche Art gelingt, eine eigene geistreich-witzige Dichtung zu sein." Odysseus' Listigkeit, der Seher Teresias, der Sirenengesang oder Penelope zahlreiche Motive und Figuren aus Homers "Odyssee" tauchen in dem Roadmovie wieder auf - wenn auch in neuen Kombinationen. Die beiden Brüder werfen einen erfrischend respektlosen Blick auf das Epos und beweisen einmal mehr, dass gute Geschichten nicht altern. Ihre Interpretation des homerischen Epos war so gelungen, dass ihr Drehbuch für den Oscar nominiert war. Erstmals seit "Blood Simple" (1984) und "Arizona Junior" (1987) verlegen die Coen-Brüder ihre Handlung wieder in den Süden der USA. Ihr Film wird zum Abgesang auf das ländliche Mississippi zur Zeit der Weltwirtschaftskrise. Denn in "O'Brother, Where Art Thou? - Eine Mississippi-Odyssee" dient die Musik nicht der Untermalung. Vielmehr ist sie selbst fester Bestandteil der Handlung, die eine längst vergangene Epoche in ein beeindruckendes Panorama bannt. Der Soundtrack erhielt einen Grammy. Neben den Drehbuchautoren war auch Kameramann Roger Deakins für den Oscar nominiert. Zudem brachte George Clooney seine Darstellung des Ulysses Everett McGill den Golden Globe ein. Im Rahmen des Schwerpunkts "Best of Coen Brothers" zeigt ARTE weitere fünf Filme des Regieduos.
