Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges versucht der Mathematikprofessor Alan Turing für das britische Militär die deutsche Chiffriermaschine Enigma zu knacken. In der Spionagezentrale Bletchley Park gilt er als Außenseiter. Einzig seiner hochbegabten Kollegin Joan Clarke vertraut er. Doch während sie über die Arbeit hinaus seine Nähe sucht, bleibt er auf Distanz. Denn es gibt ein Geheimnis, das Turing antreibt und zugleich seine Schwachstelle ist. Der brillante Mathematikprofessor Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) sucht im Zweiten Weltkrieg eine besondere Herausforderung: Er möchte die deutsche Chiffriermaschine Enigma knacken.
Im Gegensatz zu den anderen Spezialisten, die das britische Militär in der Spionagezentrale Bletchley Park dafür zusammenbringt, will es Turing ganz alleine schaffen. Sein Egoismus macht ihn von Beginn an zu einem Außenseiter im Team. Am liebsten möchten die anderen den Einzelgänger loswerden, der von einer ungewöhnlichen Idee besessen ist: Er will eine neuartige Rechenmaschine entwickeln, die das Rätsel der deutschen Verschlüsselung auf mathematischer Basis lösen kann. Wenn das gelingt, haben die Briten im Krieg mit Nazi-Deutschland einen Trumpf in der Hand. Als das wichtige Geheimprojekt stagniert, fällt Premierminister Churchill eine überraschende Entscheidung: Er überträgt die Teamleitung ausgerechnet dem verhassten Außenseiter. Vertrauen kann Turing nur einer neuen Mitarbeiterin, der hochbegabten Joan Clarke (Keira Knightley). Während sie über die Arbeit hinaus seine Nähe sucht, bleibt er auch bei ihr eisig auf Distanz. Es gibt nämlich ein Geheimnis, das Turing antreibt und zugleich seine Schwachstelle ist. Königin Elisabeth II. rehabilitierte 2013 mit einem längst überfälligen "Royal Pardon" den Computer- und Informatikpionier Alan Turing, der in den 1950er-Jahren wegen seiner Homosexualität verurteilt wurde und unter ungeklärten Umständen ums Leben kam. Turings jahrzehntelang verschwiegenen Verdienste im Zweiten Weltkrieg verarbeitete Regisseur Morten Tyldum in "The Imitation Game - Ein streng geheimes Leben" zu einem hochspannenden Drama. "Sherlock"-Darsteller Benedict Cumberbatch in der Hauptrolle und Keira Knightley als Vertraute spielen zwei Seelenverwandte, die darunter leiden, ihrer Zeit voraus zu sein.
"The Imitation Game - Ein streng geheimes Leben" war für acht Oscars nominiert, unter anderem für die Beste Regie, den Besten Hauptdarsteller, die Beste Nebendarstellerin und als Bester Film. Eine Auszeichnung erhielt der Film für das Drehbuch, das auf der von Andrew Hodges verfassten Biografie über das außergewöhnliche Mathematikgenie Alan Turing basiert.
