Als ihm und seinen Männern nach einem heftigen Gefecht die Festnahme der Brüder Charlie (Guy Pearce) und Mike (Richard Wilson) von der blutrünstigen Burns-Bande gelingt, macht er dem Älteren ein Angebot: Beide werden begnadigt und vom Galgen verschont, sollte es Charlie gelingen, den ältesten und brutalsten Bruder der Burns-Gang, Arthur (Danny Huston), in seinem Versteck im Outback aufzutreiben und zu töten. Ist er allerdings bis in fünf Tagen nicht erfolgreich von seiner Mission zurückgekehrt, wird Mike am Weihnachtstag aufgeknüpft. Charlie entschliesst sich für den Brudermord und reitet los. Sadistische Polizisten und lynchwütige Bürger fühlen sich nicht an Stanleys Abmachung gebunden und drängen darauf, Mike lieber heute als morgen zu exekutieren. Charlie auf der anderen Seite verliert, je weiter er in der lebensfeindlichen Wüste vorankommt, das eigentliche Ziel seiner Mission aus den Augen.

Vom Knopf bis zur Hose, alle Kleider wurden für diesen Dreh per Hand gemacht, um ihnen ihr sehr authentisches Aussehen zu geben. Regisseur John Hillcoat fragte bei Rock-Star Nick Cave zuerst die Filmmusik für sein ungewöhnliches Western-Projekt an. Dann bat er den australischen Musiker, Schauspieler, Texter und Autor gleich noch, ob er auch das Drehbuch schreiben könne. Cave stellte das Script innerhalb von drei Wochen fertig und komponierte den Soundtrack. Hauptdarsteller Guy Pearce sagte 2018 in einem Interview, "The Proposition" sei ihm der liebste Film, den er je gemacht habe.
