Der Showdown spielt sich vor den blutigen Einberufungskrawallen mit Massenprotesten, Plünderungen und Lynchmorden im Jahr 1863 ab, bei denen schließlich die Armee eingreifen musste. Es spielen Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis und Cameron Diaz. New York, im Jahre 1846: In dem berüchtigten Elendsviertel Five Points kämpfen verfeindete Banden um die Vorherrschaft. Der Fleischer William Cutting führt die in Amerika geborenen "Natives" an, die den frisch angekommenen Einwanderern das Leben schwer machen. Gegen die brutale Unterdrückung lehnen sich der aus Irland stammende "Priest" Vallon und dessen Bande "Dead Rabbits" auf.
Ihr Aufstand wird in einer blutigen Straßenschlacht vernichtend niedergeschlagen. William Cutting, der als "Bill the Butcher" gefürchtet ist, sticht seinen Rivalen Vallon nieder. Aus Respekt vor der Tapferkeit seines Erzfeindes verschont er jedoch dessen kleinen Sohn. Als Amsterdam Vallon 16 Jahre später aus dem Waisenhaus zurückkehrt, herrscht Cutting uneingeschränkt über Five Points. Ehemalige Dead-Rabbit-Kämpfer sind jetzt seine Vasallen und die Politiker hat er in der Hand. Selbst Diebe wie Johnny Sirocco, dessen Bande sich Amsterdam anschließt, liefern einen beträchtlichen Teil ihrer Beute an den "Butcher" ab.
Nur die schöne Diebin Jenny Everdeane genießt die besondere Gunst, dem Gangsterboss nichts abgeben zu müssen. Schon bald nimmt er auch Amsterdam unter seine Fittiche - ohne zu ahnen, wer sein neuer Zögling wirklich ist. Um seinen Racheplan zu verwirklichen, wartet Amsterdam auf den richtigen Zeitpunkt.
