Matt Lee Whitlock ist der Polizeichef im kleinen Floridastädtchen Banyan Key. Im Job wird Matt respektiert, doch sein Privatleben hat er nicht im Griff. Er und seine Frau Alex leben in Trennung, obwohl er sie immer noch liebt. Dafür hat er eine heisse Affäre mit seiner Jugendliebe Ann Harrison , die mit dem Schläger Chris verheiratet ist. Als Ann ihm von ihrer Krebserkrankung erzählt, will ihr Matt unbedingt helfen. Eine teure Therapie in der Schweiz könnte ihr Leben um ein paar Jahre verlängern.
Während sie ihn als neuen Begünstigten in ihrer Lebensversicherung einsetzt, stiehlt Matt beschlagnahmtes Drogengeld aus der Asservatenkammer. Doch noch in der gleichen Nacht läuft alles aus dem Ruder: Die Harrisons fallen einem Brandanschlag zum Opfer. Vom Geld fehlt jede Spur. Ausgerechnet seine Exfrau übernimmt den Fall und bittet ihn auch noch um Unterstützung. Von nun an beginnt für Matt ein Wettlauf mit der Zeit, denn alle Indizien deuten auf ihn als Hauptverdächtigen hin. Er muss Alex und seinen Kollegen immer einen Schritt voraus sein.
Carl Franklins Thriller «Out of Time» spielt äusserst clever mit den typischen Krimielementen. Hier muss der sympathische Polizeichef nämlich die Beweise zerstören, die gelegt wurden. Nur so kann er seine Unschuld beweisen. Er muss also immer noch ein wenig schneller sein als seine Kollegen. Neben dem actionreichen Plot überzeugt «Out of Time» auch durch seine visuelle Eleganz: Die üppige Farbenpracht Floridas spiegelt sich auf der Leinwand, und Denzel Washington stürzt sich im Hawaiihemd in seinen Wettlauf gegen die Zeit.

Matt Whitlock ist in seinem kleinen Städtchen auf den Florida Keys ein respektierter Polizeichef. Privat läuft es dagegen nicht so gut: Er trinkt zu viel und steckt mitten in einer Scheidung von der Kriminalkommissarin Alex. Dazu ist seine neue Flamme Anne verheiratet und ihr Mann schlägt sie. Als Matt erfährt, dass Anne Krebs im Endstadium hat, fällt er eine folgenschwere Entscheidung: Er gibt ihr 450.000 Dollar, die bei einer Drogenrazzia sichergestellt wurden, um ihr eine erfolgversprechendere Behandlung in der Schweiz zu ermöglichen. Doch kurz darauf kommen Anne und ihr Mann bei einem Brand ums Leben - und das Geld ist weg. Als Matt die Lebensversicherung kassieren soll, die Drogenfahndung das entwendete Geld sucht und mit Alex seine Noch-Ehefrau den Fall um Anne übernimmt, wird dem sonst so coolen Cop klar, dass er in ziemlichen Schwierigkeiten steckt.
