Kaum zu glauben: Am 28. Dezember feiert Denzel Washington seinen 60. Geburtstag. Doch mehr denn je gehört er zu den gefragtesten Actionstars in Hollywood. Dies ist nur einer von vielen Gründen, den das "Montagskino im ZDF" zum Anlass nimmt, den zweifachen Oscar-Gewinner mit einer qualitativ hochwertigen Filmreihe zu würdigen. Den Auftakt macht am 15. Dezember 2014 die Free-TV-Premiere des packenden Thrillers "Safe House", der mit seiner Thematik den Nerv der Zeit punktgenau trifft: Denzel Washington verkörpert einen abtrünnigen CIA-Agenten, der aufgrund der brisanten Informationen, über die er verfügt, gleich von mehreren Verfolgern gejagt wird. Eine Woche später folgt der Actionfilm "Unstoppable - Außer Kontrolle". Unter der Regie von Tony Scott muss der Hollywoodstar eine Katastrophe verhindern, die durch einen mit toxischen Chemikalien beladenen Zug verursacht werden könnte. Am 29. Dezember bildet ein moderner Klassiker des Thrillergenres den Abschluss der Reihe. In "Der Knochenjäger" versucht Washington als querschnittsgelähmter Polizist einen Serienkiller zur Strecke zu bringen.

Ein abtrünniger Agent, der über sensible Informationen verfügt, wird von der CIA gefasst. Doch es scheint eine undichte Stelle zu geben, das geheime Versteck wird von Söldnern angegriffen, und nur ein Mitarbeiter und der Gefangene können sich retten - vorerst. "Safe House" ist packendes Actionkino, das die sehr aktuelle Thematik von Whistleblowern und die Überwachung durch Geheimdienste aufgreift. Die Free-TV-Premiere markiert den Auftakt einer dreiteiligen Denzel-Washington-Reihe im Montagskino. Der ehemalige CIA-Agent Tobin Frost (Denzel Washington) betreibt weltweit einen lukrativen Handel mit Geheiminformationen, wodurch er allerdings auch immer wieder in Gefahr gerät. Als er in Kapstadt von Unbekannten attackiert wird, bleibt ihm nur noch die Möglichkeit, im US-Konsulat Zuflucht zu suchen.

Umgehend wird der Verräter in ein sicheres Versteck, ein so genanntes "Safe House", gebracht, um dort verhört zu werden. Die Verantwortung für die Räumlichkeiten liegt bei dem Undercover-Agenten Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds). Doch bereits kurz nachdem Frost überführt wurde, startet eine Gruppe von Söldnern einen Angriff auf das Haus. Einzig Weston und der Gefangene überleben den blutigen Kampf, und gemeinsam gelingt dem ungleichen Duo die Flucht. Es ist offensichtlich, dass es innerhalb der CIA eine undichte Stelle geben muss, daher erhält Weston von seinen Vorgesetzten Linklater (Vera Farmiga) und Barlow (Brendan Gleeson) die Anweisung unterzutauchen. Nun ist er ganz auf sich allein gestellt, zudem beginnt der Verhörspezialist Frost ihn zu manipulieren.

Die Grenzen zwischen Gut und Böse verschwimmen, und bald weiß Weston nicht mehr, wem er überhaupt noch vertrauen kann "Safe House" war einer der kommerziell erfolgreichsten Filme in Denzel Washingtons Karriere und untermauerte einmal mehr seine Stellung als einer der zugkräftigsten Hollywoodstars. Die Filmografie des Darstellers ist sowohl quantitativ, wie auch qualitativ beeindruckend, und folgerichtig war Washington auch im Montagskino regelmäßig ein gern gesehener Gast (u.a.: "Crimson Tide", "Out of Time", "American Gangster"). Zwar hat der mittlerweile fast 60-jährige Schauspieler häufig in Actionfilmen und Thrillern ein breites Publikum begeistern können, doch ebenso hat er stetig in äußerst anspruchsvollen Rollen überzeugt. Häufig verkörperte er dabei historische Personen: So feierte er seinen Durchbruch 1987 mit der Rolle des Apartheidgegners Steve Biko in "Schrei nach Freiheit", 1992 übernahm er den Part des Black-Muslim-Anführer Malcolm X im gleichnamigen Film von Spike Lee. Bereits zweimal erhielt Denzel Washington einen Oscar (Nebendarsteller in "Glory", 1990; Hauptdarsteller in "Training Day", 2002), weitere viermal wurde er bei den Academy Awards nominiert. Zuletzt war Washington mit dem harten Actionthriller "The Equalizer" in den deutschen Kinos zu sehen, sein zweiter Film mit Regisseur Antoine Fuqua ("Training Day"). Neben seiner eindrucksvollen beruflichen Laufbahn hat Denzel Washington übrigens auch ein bemerkenswertes Privatleben vorzuweisen: Der bekennende Christ wäre beinahe Priester geworden und ist seit 1983 mit seiner Frau Pauletta verheiratet, das Ehepaar hat vier gemeinsame Kinder - im heutigen Hollywood mehr als außergewöhnlich. Denzel Washington brilliert in der Rolle des manipulativen abtrünnigen Ex-Agenten. Der gebürtige Amerikaner ist seit den frühen 1980er-Jahren im Filmgeschäft und wurde für seine Schauspielkünste mehrfach ausgezeichnet, unter anderem mit zwei Oscars. Seine bekanntesten Filme: "Training Day" (2001), "Déjà Vu - Wettlauf gegen die Zeit" (2006), "American Gangster" (2007) und "The Book of Eli" (2010). Zuletzt war er in "Equalizer" (2014) auf den großen Leinwänden zu sehen.
