Auf den frischgebackenen College-Absolventen Christopher McCandless wartet eine blendende Zukunft. Zum Leidwesen seiner wohlhabenden Eltern pfeift er auf das Studium an der renommierten Harvard Universität. Stattdessen bricht Christopher alle Brücken hinter sich ab und trampt ohne einen Cent in der Tasche quer durch Amerika. In Freundschaften mit anderen Aussteigern erfährt er jene menschliche Nähe, die er bei seiner Familie vermisste. Doch Christopher zieht es unaufhaltsam weiter, bis nach Alaska. Es ist die Sehnsucht vieler junger Menschen, sich dem Althergebrachten zu widersetzen und erst einmal die Welt kennenzulernen.
Bei dem 22-jährigen Christopher (Emile Hirsch), der gerade das College mit Auszeichnung abgeschlossen hat, ist dieser Wunsch tiefer ausgeprägt. Seine stolzen Eltern, ein renommiertes Wissenschaftler-Paar, wollen ihm ein neues Auto schenken und erwarten, dass er in Harvard Jura studiert. Nachdem Christopher die Lebenslüge seines Vaters (William Hurt) entdeckt hat, der seine frühere Frau samt Kind im Stich gelassen hat, kehrt er dieser Welt endgültig den Rücken. Heimlich setzt er sich ab, spendet seine Ersparnisse, zerschneidet seine Kreditkarten und trampt inkognito in Richtung Nordwesten. Unterwegs schlägt Christopher sich mit Gelegenheitsjobs durch und knüpft viele Freundschaften, etwa mit einem liebenswürdigen Althippie-Pärchen oder einem vereinsamten alten Mann, der ihn adoptieren will. Aber nicht einmal die bezaubernde Aussteiger-Tochter Tracy (Kristen Stewart) kann ihn von seinem lange ersehnten Ziel abbringen: Alaska.
Nach mehreren Wochen allein in der Wildnis wird seine Situation hier lebensbedrohlich: Mit Beginn der Schneeschmelze nimmt die Natur den unerfahrenen Trapper gnadenlos gefangen. Am Ende seiner langen Reise erlangt Chris eine mystische Erkenntnis. Der zivilisationskritische Abenteuerfilm erzählt die wahre Geschichte von Christopher McCandless, der 1990 alle Brücken hinter sich abbrach und zwei Jahre lang trampte, bis er in Alaska ankam. Bekannt wurde sein Schicksal durch das Buch "In die Wildnis - Allein nach Alaska" von Jon Krakauer, der diese Reise anhand von Tagebuchnotizen und Interviews packend schilderte. Der rebellische Oscar-Preisträger Sean Penn, entdeckte in dem scheiternden Aussteiger Christopher McCandless einen Seelenverwandten. In seiner vierten Regiearbeit erzählt Penn die authentische Geschichte dieses Supertramps als einfühlsames Roadmovie.
Dank dem französischen Kameramann Eric Gautier, der schon die unvergessenen Bilder in Walter Salles' Biopic "Die Reise des jungen Che" filmte, wird Christophers Trip durch die unterschiedlichen amerikanischen Landschaften zum magischen Kinoerlebnis. Emile Hirsch, der an Leonardo DiCaprio erinnert, verkörpert die Getriebenheit des modernen Trappers mit sanfter Intensität und zieht den Zuschauer bis zum Schluss in seinen Bann. Entstanden ist eine zweifach Oscar-nominierte Hymne an den Aufbruch und die große Freiheit - mit allen Konsequenzen.     Der Film wird nicht ausreichend gewürdigt, wenn die großartige - irgendwie magische - Musik von Eddie Vedder (von Pearl Jam) nicht erwähnt wird. Absolute Empfehlung.
    [[[Solodebüt mit 42. Nach fast zwei Jahrzehnten im Musicbiz veröffentlicht Pearl-Jam-Frontmann, -Sänger und Gitarrist Eddie Vedder mit „Into The Wild“ am 14. September 2007 sein allererstes Album im Alleingang. Die Entstehungsgeschichte des Vedder-Erstlings liest sich dabei durchaus spektakulär: Auf persönlichen Wunsch (!) von Sean Penn („21 Gramm“, „The Game“ u. a) schrieb er ein knappes Dutzend brandneuer Songs für dessen gleichnamigen Film, bei dem der Oscar-Preisträger („Mystic River“) sowohl Regie führte als auch das Drehbuch schrieb. Lead-Single des elf Songs umfassenden, hoch-atmosphärischen Werkes ist der Song „Hard Sun“. ]]]
