16 Straßenblöcke können zu einem Albtraum werden, wenn man einen Kriminellen vom Gefängnis bis zum Gericht bringen will, wo er in einem Korruptionsprozess als Zeuge fungieren soll. Action-Star Bruce Willis schlüpft in die Rolle des dienstmüden Detective Mosley, der noch kurz vor dem Feierabend den Kleinkriminellen Eddie im Gericht abliefern soll und schon nach wenigen Metern den ersten Mordanschlag auf Eddie abwehren muss. Der abgekämpfte New Yorker Detective Jack Mosley (Bruce Willis) erwartet nicht mehr viel vom Leben. Seinen Frust ertränkt er täglich im Whisky. Am Ende eines harten Arbeitstages wird dem desillusionierten Cop noch eine unerfreuliche Aufgabe übertragen: Er soll den Kleinganoven Eddie Bunker (Mos Def) als Zeugen ins 16 Straßenblocks entfernte Gerichtsgebäude transportieren. Als Mosley unterwegs Halt an einem Schnapsladen macht, beginnen die Probleme: In letzter Sekunde vereitelt er einen Mordanschlag auf seinen Gefangenen.

Erschüttert muss der Polizist feststellen, dass seine eigenen Kollegen hinter dem Attentat stecken. Eine Gruppe von korrupten Beamten um Mosleys langjährigen Partner Frank Nugent (David Morse) will Bunker als unliebsamen Zeugen beseitigen. Nugent bietet Mosley einen Deal an, doch der lehnt zu seiner Überraschung ab. Der alternde Ermittler will Bunker um jeden Preis schützen. In einer rasanten Verfolgungsjagd flüchtet er mit seinem Gefangenen quer durch New York. Mosleys ohnehin schon blank liegende Nerven werden dabei zusätzlich durch Bunkers ständiges Geplapper strapaziert.

Unkonventionelle Cops sind ihre Spezialität: So wie Regisseur und Action-Urgestein Richard Donner in den "Lethal Weapon"-Filmen, hat auch Hauptdarsteller Bruce Willis in letzter Zeit mehr als einmal kantigen Polizisten kurz vor dem Ruhestand zu Leinwandruhm verholfen ("Stirb langsam - Ein guter Tag zum Sterben", 2013, "R.E.D. 2 - Noch Älter. Härter. Besser", 2013, "Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For, 2014",). Richard Donner hat in seinem - bisher letzten - Film einen durchweg spannenden Cop-Thriller geschaffen, ein Remake des Clint-Eastwood-Klassikers "Der Mann, der niemals aufgibt" aus dem Jahre 1977. Als Sympathisant der PETA-Organisation forderte Donner das Premierenpublikum von "16 Blocks" auf, keine Pelze zu tragen.

Mit der Lethal Weapon-Reihe hat Richard Donner sich einen Namen als Actionspezialist gemacht. So ist denn auch nicht erstaunlich, dass der Regisseur auch mit 16 Blocks die Fetzen fliegen lässt und gekonnt Spannung erzeugt. Positiv überraschen derweil die stilleren Momente des Filmes, in denen Anleihen an den Film noir erkennbar sind. Im alten Kämpen Bruce Willis hat Donner die ideale Besetzung für die Hauptrolle gefunden, der mit dem im Filmgeschäft aufstrebenden Rapper Mos Def in der Nebenrolle des Eddie eine schillernde Ergänzung findet. Nach The Italian Job, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy und Be Kind Rewind ist Mos Def mittlerweile einem breiteren Publikum bekannt, doch hat der New Yorker seinen Einstand auf der Leinwand bereits 1991 mit der Krimikomödie The Hard Way gefeiert. Schon geraume Zeit länger gibt Bruce Willis als Actionheld den Schurken auf die Ohren.
